Mike Newton's
mother,
Carmen R. Newton, age 94, Logansport, passed away at 1:00 a.m.,
Thursday, December 15, 2011, in Memorial Hospital.
Born in Flint, Michigan, on May
7, 1917, she was the daughter of Ebert and Ruth Cunningham Robbins.
Carmen was married to James Glen
Newton, who preceded her in death on December 13, 1972.
A 1935 graduate of Peru High School,
Carmen retired as a night supervisor from the Logansport State
Hospital. She was a member of the former St. Bridget's Church.
Surviving are her children, Carmen
Sue Ann (William) Jargstorf, Delphi, Marilyn K. Williams, Kokomo,
Mike (Linda) Newton, Naperville, Ill., Janet Ruth Newton, Logansport,
Pat Newton, Morrison, Colo., and Terra Joan Newton (Tom Trueb),
Delphi; grandchildren, Mark (Diana) Jargstorf, Brent Williams,
Darcy (Jason) Gonzales, Kristen (Brian) McCallum and Kelly (Joseph)
Haufle.
Also surviving are great grandchildren,
Jeremiah, Justin, Alex, Jake, Jordayn, Antonio, and Carmen Rose;
nieces and nephews, Nancy, Margaret, Judy and children, Robert
Alvey, Joe, Jim, Mary Susan, CeCe, Rosie and children.
She was preceded in death by her
brothers, William Holton and James Holton.
Carmen Newton was born in the springtime
which may be the reason she loved flowers so well; her garden
was awash with the brightness of tulips and daffodils. Lily of
the Valley and roses were her favorites along with lilacs which
filled the house each April, even though they made her sneeze.
Carmen Newton was a lover of birds;
the Indiana cardinal brought her joy. Her grandchildren
would call out look, theres Grandma Newts redbird!
whenever they saw one.
She loved to read, was never without
a book. In the hot Indiana summer nights, she would whisper stories
to her children as they lay all around her on Big Grandmas
quilt. Weekly trips to the library to find stories on their
own were an inherited happy ritual for them.
She was a beauty in high school;
her high school graduation picture shows a lovely young girl with
a sweet smile and shy eyes. She met the love of her life
at a Logansport/Peru high school football game where they wagered
a stick of gum on the outcome he lost. She pasted
the gum wrapper in her scrapbook with the breathless notation,
met Red Newton at a football game tonight. Hes
cute. Their marriage lasted until his death and gave
them six children, a big white corner house with a brick porch,
and a buckeye tree. They shared a love of Big Band music,
stealing away to Colonial Gardens where the danced to the sounds
of Glen Miller and Woody Herman. And they loved swimming,
spending weeks at Culver with their kids and in-laws in a rented
cottage called "The Irish".
She was calm and patient midst the
tornado of living that six children create. She sewed clothes
for her daughters and for her daughters dolls. She watched
her sons play their way through sports. She made a mean
chocolate cake with white icing that even Martha would envy. She
loved to drive a car. She liked the Marx Brothers. She
saw Fanny Brice when she was sixteen. And Sally Rand at
the Worlds Fair. She went camping with her son in
Utah at age 80. She was filled with humor and with intelligence
even at 94. She was reading two books a week and watching
Wheel of Fortune and working an impossibly difficult puzzle at
the time of her death.
She touched lives with her kindliness
and her willingness to love and listen without judging. She
truly did make a difference in the lives of others. People remembered
her. Hows your Mom doing? was a question
all of her children heard daily.
She loved her family with a selflessness
that is seldom seen. She was kind and gentle with a beauty
of heart rarely seen. She was loved and we will miss her.
Services for Carmen Newton will
be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2011, at Kroeger Funeral

Susan Eagan Timmon's
husband,
Donald Timmons, died unexpectedly on December 1, 2005. The
following information is from the Lafayette Journal & Carrier
Newspaper:
Frontier school mourns death of principal December 2, 2005
BROOKSTON - Staff
and students at Frontier Elementary School are mourning the death
of their principal. Don Timmons, 63, died unexpectedly of an apparent
heart attack early Thursday, his son, Tim Timmons, said.
Don Timmons had
been Frontier's principal since 2000. Previously, he served
as principal of Frontier Middle School for four years and Dayton
Elementary for 18 years.
Timmons, of Battle
Ground, Indiana, is survived by his wife Susan, two sons, 4 grandchildren,
his mother and a brother.
Superintendent
Bernie Graiser informed the teachers and staff of Timmons' passing
before they went home. Extra staff and counselors were brought
to the elementary school. "Of course, everybody saw
him yesterday," Graiser said Thursday evening, "and
he had his usual smile on his face. It's quite a shock to
everyone."
Fifth-grade teacher
Cretia Jensen said the news was "pretty overwhelming for
the staff." Timmons was an organized efficient problem-solver,
she said. He also had a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. "He
had talked about retiring in a year or two so we knew he was thinking
about leaving us," people looked at him (like) he wasn't
really like a principal. Some people saw him like part of
a family" Jensen had her students share memories of Timmons.
Most of the reflections involved the personal one-on-one
time he devoted to them.
Parent Deb Brenner,
whose son is a fifth-grader, said she noticed that some students
were very upset and sobbing on their way home Thursday. "Our
sympathies certainly go to his family," she said. "He
was a great guy. He was there 110 percent for the kids."
Timmons was very dedicated to his work, always interested
in developing new ideas and finding ways to fund new initiatives,
Graser said. "Students came number one in his mind."
he said. "Some might think he came to Frontier to retire,
but he was a very active, energetic principal looking for new
ideas... He's just very much a stabilizing force within the school
itself. The kids and the staff just loved him."
Timmons' favorite
projects were the school library and an outdoor natural habitat
supported by grants he wrote, Graser said.
The principal
was well-liked among staff and students, Graser said. Graser said
he will miss Timmons as a colleague. "He was very
much a great support to me, also. Being such a small school corporation
with such few administrators, he was the one with experience that
I could always sound things off of."
Brenner, who worked
with Timmons through the parent -teacher organization, said he
was prompt about answering questions or concerns and able to remain
calm in the heat of the moment.
"He had a
wonderful way of welcoming you into his office," she said.
"He would sit next to you instead of across the desk from
you. He always made you feel assured that he would help you with
whatever you were struggling with... He had a quiet presence,
but it's going to be a big void."
Timmons was principal
of several schools including Brookside Middle School and Emma
E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida.
