Ruth J. Castaldi
October 22, 2006
Ruth
J. Castaldi, 91, died of lymphoma at 9: 10 a.m. Oct. 22, 2006,
in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw, Indiana, where she resided.
She was born Ruth Jeanette Speitel
on Dec. 11, 1914, in Logansport. On May 19, 1938, she married
Lawrence Castaldi, who died in 1985.
The young couple ran a small grocery
store in Logansport and moved to the Chicago area when Castaldi
started work at Midwest Spring Manufacturing Co. After
Midwest opened a plant in Mentone, they began looking for an
Indiana town where they could raise their family. They
settled on Warsaw and built a house here in 1954. The couple
became very active in Warsaw. Castaldi was one of the leaders
in establishing Kosciusko Community Hospital, for instance, and
Mrs. Castaldi followed through by volunteering at the hospital
for 30 years. She also was active in Zeralda Reading Club,
Garden Club, Kosciusko County Historical Society, Sacred Heart
Church's Bible study group, and several bridge groups. She
delivered Meals on Wheels until she was 90. She traveled
widely but most enjoyed activities in Warsaw. After her
husband died, she refused her children's entreaties to move closer
to them because she liked living in Warsaw. "This
is where my life is," she used to say. When she became
ill last year, she went to live with her daughter, Diana, while
she received treatment at Northwestern University Medical Center.
After the treatments, she returned to Warsaw and moved
in to Miller's Merry Manor in June.
Surviving are three daughters:
Diana Scheeler, Northfield, Ill.; Rebecca Jones, Annapolis, Md.;
and Loretta Castaldi, Washington, D.C.; a son, David Castaldi,
Chestnut Hill, Mass; eight grandchildren; nine great -grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Resurrection will be
at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw,
with Monsignor James Wolf officiating.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday
at Titus Funeral Home, with a rosary at 8 p.m.
