James
L. Steger, 70, of 214 EMS C29 Lane, Warsaw, died at 8:30 a.m.
Jan. 15, 2000, in Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
He was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Dunkirk,
N.Y., to Stanley A. and Geraldine F. Carrus Steger. On
Aug. 14, 1954, he married Lorraine Jakubowska, who died May 19,
1987. On March 4, 1989, he married Marilyn Eppich, who
survives.
He was a member of Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, Warsaw. He lived in South Bend from 1965-69,
moving to Warsaw in 1969. He worked at Zimmer Inc., where
he was director and manager of human resources, responsible for
hiring all employees during a period of company growth from 100
to 2,000 employees, and retiring in 1993. He founded Zimmer
Quarter Century Club and was former president of Kosciusko County
Personnel Association. He was affiliated with Knights of
Columbus, Warsaw, and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus
and former Grand Knight - K of C. He was a former Scoutmaster
of Troop 717, Oswego, and Marine Corps League, South Bend. He
was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1948-90, retiring
in 1990, and a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant colonel.
He graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1948 and received
a bachelor's degree in education in 1953 from State University
of New York College for Teachers at Buffalo.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula
(Mrs. Dave) Bowman, Warsaw; four sons: Lawrence Steger, Warsaw;
Jay Steger and Bradley Steger, both of Indianapolis; and Randall
Steger, Chicago; three stepdaughters: Laurel (Mrs. Jim) Canan,
Janesville, Wis.; Kathy (Mrs. Mark) Eppich-Slezak: Cleveland,
Ohio; and Julie (Mrs. Arun) Subramanian, Chicago; and 15 grandchildren:
Kandace (Tom) Herschberger; Kassandra (Tom) Rowland; Kyle, Kristopher
and Kaitlyn Tom; Julianne, Frances, Curtis, Abigail, Sophie and
Hayden Steger; Robert and Tyler Canan; and Matthew and David
Slezak.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday
at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw, with Father Terry Fisher
officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw,
with military graveside honors by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to
8 p.m. Tuesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, where
there will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m.
